This week, Vancouver will host the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE), one of the largest global forums for medical educators.

“It’s wonderful to see the International Conference on Residency Education come to Vancouver this year,” says UBC’s Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education, Roger Wong. “It’s a real opportunity for those involved in residency education to network, and explore how curricular changes and technological developments can help advance training for our residents.”

Organized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the ICRE, which was last held in Toronto, is expected to draw over 1,500 medical educators from around the world.

The event will feature several presentations by UBC faculty and staff members, including:

  • Oscar Casiro, Professor with the UBC Department of Pediatrics, and former Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island, who will deliver a presentation on leadership strategies and competencies in educational and healthcare environments situated outside main academic centres.
  • Roger Wong, Clinical Professor in the UBC Division of Geriatric Medicine and Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education, who will deliver a presentation on teaching quality improvement in residency education, the topic of his new e-book, which will be officially launched during the ICRE. Dr. Wong will also deliver a lightning round session on the benefits and requirements of sustainable postgraduate medical education growth, showcasing lessons learned and success stories from UBC’s PGME expansion over the past decade.
  • Rebecca Turnbull, UBC’s Resident Wellness Counsellor, who will be running a workshop on resident wellness during the Program Administrators Conference, running October 21-22.

Close to a dozen academic papers, developed by UBC faculty, staff and residents, will also be the focus of discussion during a number of conference sessions.

This year, the International Resident Leadership Summit (IRLS) will be held in conjunction with the ICRE. The two-day event, running October 23-24, represents one of the largest resident development events in Canada and, according to Dr. Wong, will offer UBC’s medical residents insight into leadership opportunities now and in the years ahead.
