Faculty members honoured at the Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony

On May 15, the Faculty of Medicine celebrated the academic achievements and distinguished careers of 62 faculty members during its annual Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony. From the Departments of Medicine, Physical Therapy and beyond, recipients from across the Faculty wore black gowns to mark their recent promotions to Professor, Clinical Professor or Professor of Teaching. Special recognition was also reserved for twenty-three members who were granted Emeritus or Emerita status for the significant contributions they made over the course of their careers. In his opening remarks, Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, congratulated the members on their academic excellence and service to society. “These gowns represent the esteemed admiration and respect you have all earned as a result of your exceptional professional accomplishments as scholars, researchers and educators,” he said. “Through your work, you have helped build and shape the Faculty of Medicine into the vibrant community that it is today.”

My Top UBC Tip

Here, a selection of recipients from the Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremony share their top piece of advice for colleagues who are just starting their UBC journey.

Joseph Anthony

Department of Physical Therapy

“My advice would be to network. UBC has world-class people who are doing amazing things across faculties and departments, and my suggestion would be to get outside your own department and learn what things are happening on campus. You may be surprised at the people you meet and the opportunities that present themselves.”

Sue Stanton

Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy

“Create work that is meaningful to you and others.”

Terry Phang

Department of Surgery

“Find a mentor and a collaborator who will help you on your path.”

Silvia Guillemi

Department of Family Practice

“Consider diversifying your career path by participating in clinical teaching and research, while working in an area of medicine that you find engaging and challenging.”

Lori Brotto

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

“Get to know, and be nice to, everyone you encounter. You are not just a scientist interfacing with other scientists in a bubble of data bliss. You are now part of a complex and ever changing eco-system where you will encounter and liaise with many different individuals who will have a bearing on your journey. Take the time to know who they are and understand your relationship with them. I wish I had met our administrative staff and managers, finance associates, payroll staff, IT experts, human resources managers, communications officers, and a number of other key UBC personnel much earlier in my academic journey. I would have been better equipped to identify the experts to solve my problems after far less time than I had spent. In addition, staff move through the ranks at UBC, and staff members who may have been in administrative or support roles at one time may take on a leadership position at a later time. It costs nothing and requires little effort to be kind, respectful, and courteous in all of your interactions.”
