The recognition is given to those who have made contributions to medicine and the health sciences in Canada and around the world that have led to extraordinary improvements in human health.

Dr. Finlay has advanced our understanding of the role microbes play in human health and disease, uncovering their function in asthma, malnutrition and enteric diseases, with implications for prevention, treatment and cure. His research has led to a number of human and animal vaccines, as well as treatments for drug-resistant infections.

Dr. Finlay is the author of over 500 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is the co-author of the book, Let Them Eat Dirt: Saving Your Child from an Oversanitized World, in which he outlines the latest research into the role bacteria play in growing bodies, the possible dangers of oversanitization, and how parents can ensure their kids get exposed to healthy bugs.
