The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Director, School of Audiology and Speech Sciences at UBC. This position is for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences who is currently in a tenure stream faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, Associate Professor of Teaching, Professor or Professor of Teaching.

The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $450 million in research funding each year.

The mission of the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences is to advance knowledge of human communication, its disorders, and related areas, in order to improve health and quality of life for all individuals within their communities. We accomplish our mission by conducting leading-edge research, by educating future clinicians and scientists to become leaders in their fields, and by actively engaging with community partners. The School provides high-quality, graduate-level education (MSc and PhD) to more than 120 students and learners per year, located at either the Point Grey campus or our distributed site in collaboration with the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island, who are studying to become audiologists, speech-language pathologists, or who wish to become researchers and academics in the field of human communication sciences and disorders. The School currently has 16 faculty members (including 13 tenure stream appointments), approximately 750 adjunct and clinical faculty, and 10 staff members.

The School Director will provide leadership in advancing a provincial departmental mission, the Faculty’s strategic plan, and goals that align with the University. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to foster an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged; the successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in academic and/or administrative leadership roles, demonstrated success in supporting the career development and mentorship of diverse faculty members, demonstrated commitment to education across the spectrum of learners, and a strong record of research and innovation, educational scholarship and/or professional contributions in an area related to the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences. The candidate will also have demonstrated experience in team building, fostering engagement and promoting Indigenous cultural awareness, and inclusivity across working and learning environments.  The successful candidate will also have experience working with community partners to enable and support the integration of teaching and research into clinical service planning and delivery in Audiology and Speech-language Pathology. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
