The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Vice Dean, Education. This is a 0.8 FTE (part-time) position for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to UBC who currently holds a clinical or tenure stream faculty appointment at UBC. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

The UBC Faculty of Medicine is committed to fostering excellence in education, research, and service that contributes to the health of individuals and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including British Columbia’s health authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $450 million in research funding each year.

Reporting to the Dean of Medicine, the Vice Dean, Education will work closely with the Senior Director, Education Programs & Services, and other members of the Dean’s Executive team as well as academic leaders and various partners across the Faculty, University, distributed medical and health professional programs, affiliated partner institutions, and government to align and integrate health education efforts within the Faculty of Medicine. The Vice Dean, Education will provide strategic leadership in advancing inclusive and culturally responsive educational programs, with a specific commitment to supporting Indigenous education, strengthening partnerships with Indigenous communities, and embedding Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning across curricula. In addition, the individual will also provide strategic advice and collaborate with Department Heads and School Directors to address the needs of academic units, ensuring that educational programs are high-quality, innovative, effective, inclusive, and align with the Faculty’s role in training health care professionals for British Columbia and Canada.

The Vice Dean, Education will provide leadership by ensuring the education portfolio is advancing the Faculty’s vision and strategic plan, in alignment with the strategic direction of the University. The incumbent will foster and maintain an environment that promotes the Faculty’s values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration and equity where civility, diversity, opportunity, and inclusion are valued and central to all encounters across the Faculty, the University, and the communities.

The successful candidate will hold an MD or equivalent, a proven track record in senior leadership roles within a clinical or academic setting and have demonstrated success in supporting the career development and mentorship of diverse faculty members. The successful candidate will have strong administrative leadership experience with an understanding of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate medical education, health professional programs, research, academic medicine and clinical care. The successful candidate will also have experience in strategic planning and implementation, as well as demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of interested parties. The candidate will have experience in negotiation, conflict engagement and management, leading organizational change particularly within large or complex academic environments, team building, fostering engagement, and promoting inclusivity across the working and learning environments. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
