The MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of UGME Indigenous Health Curriculum Lead. This is a three-year term appointment with a time commitment of 0.2 FTE one (1) day per week and is renewable subject to satisfactory review. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of this role.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine plays a critical role in training the health professionals of the future. Students in the accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) undergraduate program have the opportunity to learn medicine at one of four geographically distinct program sites – Island Medical Program (IMP), Northern Medical Program (NMP), Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP), and the Southern Medical Program (SMP), where they gain invaluable training and mentoring from highly skilled clinicians.
This position will be responsible for, but not limited to, providing leadership for integration, coordination, delivery and quality improvement of the Indigenous Health curriculum and assessment across all four years and at all four sites of the MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP), enabling alignment with the MDUP Exit Competencies and course objectives, and meets relevant Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) accreditation standards.
The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and an MD and/or PhD. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of:
- Knowledge of Indigenous engagement protocols and ethical frameworks for working with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
- Familiarity with decolonizing methodologies and pedagogical approaches to curriculum and education.
- Deep knowledge of Indigenous health strengths and diversity, history and impacts of colonization on health determinants, and core concepts of Indigenous cultural safety and humility.
- A critical, strategic, and analytical thinker.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, able to engage effectively with faculty, staff, students, partners, and the broader community.
- Ability to build, nurture, and maintain strong partnerships and collaborative working relationships across all organizational levels.
- Collaboration with Site Leadership and Site Indigenous Coordinators to foster engagement with local Indigenous communities, advancing clinical placements and learning opportunities for medical students.
- Previous administrative leadership experience; excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to stay focused on big-picture priorities, even amid reactive demands.
- Be committed to inclusive excellence and actively applies an equity, diversity, and inclusion framework to their work.
