The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) invites internal applications for up to six Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) in any field of research aligned to the FoM strategic plan to be considered for the 2023 CRC Competition. As this is an internal search, applicants must already hold a full-time, tenure stream faculty appointment in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Applicants must be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination) who (a) are excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated particular research creativity (b) have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years, and (c) have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers. The chairholder must demonstrate an original, innovative, high quality research program. Chairs are tenable for five years and are renewable once.
Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for a Tier 2 CRC position. Normally, applicants for Tier 2 Chairs should be no more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of chair nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from earning their highest degree (and where career breaks such as maternity, parental, extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., exist) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the CRC program’s Tier 2 justification process. Effective March 1, 2020, research interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are recognized and may be counted as an eligible delay. UBC recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., maternity leave, parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement. These leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.

The information you provide will only be used to determine whether you qualify for participation in this restricted process, and to advance accessibility, equity, and fair adjudication in this process. Data will be collected by the Equity & Inclusion Office and shared confidentially with the search committee. All responses will be stored in a secure database.
All applicants are required to self-identify as a member of one or more of the four designated groups using the equity survey. Self-identification is necessary for the University to achieve equity targets set by the CRC Program. This information will be stored in a secure database and made available only to members of the adjudication committee.
A complete application package includes:
- A letter of support (maximum two-pages) from the Department Head or School Director outlining the individual’s research accomplishments to date and future research potential in brief, as well as the institutional support that will be offered to the nominee by the Department/School, should the application be successful
- A letter of interest consisting of the following sections:
- Quality of the Nominee (maximum one-page) – a statement by the candidate outlining their work as an excellent emerging researcher of world-class caliber who has demonstrated particular research creativity and the potential to achieve international recognition in their field within the next five to ten years
- Research Program (maximum six-pages):
- Engagement with research users and communication of results
- Description of training strategies
- References (maximum two-pages) – a list of all references cited in the proposed research program
- A full UBC curriculum vitae
- Financial Plan, using tab 2 of the most recent iteration of the FoM Recruitment Planner
- A brief statement (1-2 pages) of the applicant’s current or planned contributions to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in academic, professional, or community contexts.

Department Heads and School Directors may support a maximum number of applications based on the total number of tenure stream FTEs within the particular Department/School. Please see the Faculty of Medicine website for details.
The assessment of application materials and the identification of successful candidates will be undertaken by an adjudication committee chaired by the Vice-Dean, Research and recommended to the Dean of Medicine. Successful applicants are expected to submit a nomination application to CRC Program in the October 2023 CRC national competition.
