The UBC Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP), at The University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, Southern Medical Program (SMP).

Further, the Faculty has a fundamental responsibility to educate, develop and mentor future and current health practitioners, educators and researchers who can work together effectively to serve evolving health needs.
This is an administrative role with a three-year term appointment, with potential for renewal for a second term, subject to satisfactory review. The position has a time commitment of approximately 0.6 FTE, equivalent to three (3) days per week. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of this role.
Travel is expected within the Interior region, with occasional travel to Vancouver and other areas of BC, as required.
The Assistant Dean, Student Affairs, Southern Medical Program (SMP) will be responsible for ensuring that the dedicated cohort of SMP students know about and can access student services including: personal support, academic support, financial services, and career guidance and preparation. While the position is necessarily at arm’s length from the Office of the Assistant Dean, Southern Medical Program, and the Office of the Regional Associate Dean, Southern Medical Program, it is critical that there is a cooperative and collaborative relationship between these positions.
This position works closely and collaboratively with the Associate Dean, Student Affairs and the Assistant Deans, Student Affairs across the province, as well as the Associate Director, Student Affairs and Student Affairs, Coordinator, SMP. There is frequent formal and informal collegial contact amongst these faculty members to ensure equity across all sites.
The successful candidate will hold an MD or equivalent. The successful candidate must hold a UBC faculty appointment or be eligible to hold a UBC faculty appointment.
The successful candidate will have held previous leadership experience, including leading teams, building, coaching, mentoring and empowering others; experience and knowledge in the field of advising, counselling, student assessment, feedback and remediation principles is an asset; knowledge of the University of British Columbia MD Undergraduate Program preferred, especially a good knowledge of program wide curricular goals for students; exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to effectively engage faculty, staff, partners, and the broader community; skilled in identifying challenges and implementing effective solutions to improve the MD Undergraduate Program.
