Savvas Nicolaou, an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology, received the 2013 Mentor of the Year Award for Region 1 (British Columbia and Alberta) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The Mentor of the Year Award recognizes Fellows of the Royal College who have had a significant impact on the career development of students, residents and/or Fellows.
Dr. Nicolaou, the Director of Emergency and Trauma Imaging at Vancouver General Hospital, has been actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows and has served as a mentor for many of them. He has received many teaching awards, including a 2013 UBC Killam Teaching Prize in recognition of excellence in teaching.
As Director of Undergraduate Radiology Education in the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Nicolaou helped integrate radiology into the medical curriculum.
Dr. Nicolaou continues to contribute to the field of emergency radiology, publishing over 100 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals. Using state-of-the-art imaging technology, he is investigating ways to develop faster, safer, and more sensitive methods for diagnosing patients in the acute care setting.
