The husband-and-wife team of Laura Magee and Peter von Dadelszen have won the Chesley Award from the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy.
The Chesley Award is given to a member of the society in recognition of her/his sustained and substantial contribution to research in preeclampsia, not only for her/his work but also for encouraging the work of others. Dr. Magee and Dr. von Dadelszen are the first to share this prize.
Dr. Magee, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Senior Clinician Scientist at the Child and Family Research Institute, focuses on anti-hypertensive management of high blood pressure during pregnancy. She has recently completed the CHIPS Trial (Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy Study) and leads other national and international projects, including the Canadian Perinatal Network, a national database of women with threatened birth before 29 weeks, with a focus on preventing cerebral palsy through magnesium sulphate.
Dr. von Dadelszen, a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is leading a set of projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aimed at pre-eclampsia in the developing world through community-level prevention, case identification, monitoring, and treatment. He is also leading other projects funded in Canada.
Dr. Magee also has been chosen to be President Elect of both the ISSHP (2016-18) and the International Society of Obstetric Medicine (2018-22). She will be the first person ever to serve as president of both organizations.
Update: Dr. von Dadelszen received the 2014 Excellence in Research Award from the Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (APOG). The award recognizes outstanding scientific leadership, research mentoring, creative effort and major research accomplishments of a Canadian researcher (or research group) who is an active member of APOG.
