Meet the Class of 2020

Maria Chiara Toselli

Hometown: Calgary, Alberta
Program: Cell and Developmental Biology
What attracted you to your field?

I have always been interested in basic cell and molecular biology, and I found a lab that allowed me to study this in the context of pancreas development and regeneration. In addition, I was attracted to the lab because I had a high degree of autonomy in developing my own experiments and ultimately projects.

What is your favourite moment from your time at UBC?

Meeting all the fantastic, highly intelligent people throughout my PhD program and developing many-long lasting friendships were obviously great moments. However, there is nothing that can compare to the feeling you get from finally getting your experiment to work after years of effort. In my case, it took more than two years of developing and trying to build this certain model. That moment I realized it worked definitely was the most memorable because I finally realized my hard work paid off.

As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?

I have always been inspired by those that know exactly what they want to do. I have recently decided to change careers to explore a new path, and I am enjoying the process of learning, trying new things, and developing new skills.

What is one small pleasure that brings you joy?

Listening to a good audiobook during early morning jogs. While I cannot say I derive pleasure from running, the boost of endorphins after the run and the feeling that I have already accomplished something first thing in the morning makes the exercise worth it.

What do you hope will change as a result of COVID-19?

I think COVID-19 has really shattered ‘physical’ borders in the sense that people are still being productive without having to be present in the physical workspace. I hope this change stays after the lockdown eases and encourages people, universities, and businesses to consider opportunities outside of where they are located.
