Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Class of 2018
Hometown: Makati, Philippines
What attracted you to your field of study or research?
I was always interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and rehabilitation but I wasn’t sure about the specific profession. During one of my classes, my professor mentioned occupational therapy and it made me interested to learn more. I started volunteering in activities related to rehabilitation and OT. I also shadowed and interviewed occupational therapists in both the Philippines and Vancouver and this made me realize that I wanted to be an OT. I was drawn to the evaluative, analytics and creative aspects of the profession.
What excites you about the upcoming year?
I’m excited to learn and collaborate with my fellow MOT students and professors. Based on the introduction package we just received, the curriculum seems so comprehensive and diverse and I’m excited to learn more. I’m also really looking forward to starting the placements later in the program.
What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I like to dance!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I see myself either working as a full-time occupational therapist or as a PhD Candidate working on research to improve evidence-based practices.
Best piece of advice: A really good mentor told me to always ask the question “Why.” He highlighted the importance of considering the significance and the bigger picture before focusing too much on the details. I think this would be good advice to keep in mind when I start working on addressing the needs of my clients.
Last vacation destination: My family and I went to New York last May and it was great! I’m also really lucky to get a “staycation” in the Philippines over the past few months!
