Program: MSc. in Genetic Counselling
Class of 2018
Hometown: Calgary, Alberta
What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Throughout my university career I had researched many different career paths, knowing I wanted my focus to be in the field of human genetics. While fascinated by the science behind genetic mutations and inheritance, I was also interested in how genetic disorders affect individuals and their families not only physically but also psychologically.
During a senior level human genetics course, I learned about the familial and psychological implications of genetic disorders and how these are dealt with in a clinical setting. Within this course I was introduced to genetic counselling by a guest speaker who is a genetic counsellor at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This brief introduction to the field sparked my interest, and as a result I contacted the genetic counsellor to set up a meeting. She explained what a career in genetic counselling would be like and how it is a dynamic environment where you are faced with a variety of challenges. This inspired me to begin the process to reach my career goals.
What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am excited to meet my peers and instructors, begin work in clinic and explore Vancouver and surrounding areas.
What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
My late father was an Italian immigrant and although I was raised in Canada, my family still holds on to many Italian values. I have studied the Italian language and culture for the past 8 years allowing me to be well versed. Italy is and will always be my favourite place to travel to.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself working as a genetic counsellor in Calgary, Alberta or somewhere near Calgary.
