Program: MSc in Speech-Language Pathology
Class of 2017
Hometown: Delta, B.C
What attracted you to your field of study or research?
I am fascinated by the structure and function of our bodies, and have always been one to ask questions about how and why things work. Communication is such an integral piece of who we are as humans. It’s a very special attribute. When this piece is compromised or lost, I recognized that it affects more than just one’s ability to talk or understand. It can affect one’s whole well-being and perspective on life. Recognizing the importance of communication on life participation, I decided that I wanted to know the how and why behind various communication disorders. I also wanted to be able to offer support to those who experience difficulties in this area in order to help improve the overall quality of their lives. Little did I know, speech-language pathology encompasses a vast array of exciting and interesting areas including motor speech, voice, fluency, articulation, acquired language, developmental language, dysphagia and more!
What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am beyond excited to re-connect with my classmates after a summer of externships to share in our experiences. I also look forward to delving deeper into various communication disorders and completing our final two clinical placements.
What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I’ve always wanted to be a performer. When I was younger, I wanted to be a movie star. Then, I wanted to work on Saturday Night Live. Now, I want to be a back-up dancer for Beyoncé (in addition to being an SLP). I listen to one of Beyoncé’s albums before every major exam!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself working as a clinician in a positive environment with wonderful team dynamics and collaborative inter-professional team work. Population and setting TBD. So far, I enjoy all aspects of speech-language pathology so I’m completely open-minded.
Best piece of advice: Your classmates and professors/instructors are invaluable supports. Soon, they will be your colleagues. When school and/or life gets challenging, you’ve got a network at your fingertips to help support you. Accept their support and provide support when you can. We’re all in this together! Oh, and when times get extra tough, a dance party always helps.
Last vacation destination: Shuswap Lake and it was oh so magical.
