Program: Master of Physical Therapy
Class of 2018
Hometown: Richmond
What attracted you to your field of study or research?
What I love most about physiotherapy is the wide range of work environments as well as the versatility of skills required to work with different populations. For example, a physiotherapist can work in private clinics, hospitals or with a sports team and as a result, their skill-set changes and becomes specific to the types of people needing care. The adaptability of the field fascinates me.
What excites you about the upcoming year?
I am really excited to work with a group of students that share the same passion and determination as I have to succeed in this field. We’ve all taken different roads to come to this point and I’m looking forward to learning from their experiences and sharing mine.
What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I competed nationally in badminton. It’s a really fast and fun sport! And like any competitive physical activity, I’ve injured myself and needed to see a physiotherapist multiple times. Little did I know that these visits to the physio would spark my interest to become one!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
To be honest, as a physiotherapist, I don’t know where I want to work or with what kind of patients I want to work with. I have worked and volunteered in hospitals, elderly homes, private clinics, and sports teams and I haven’t particularly gravitated towards any one area yet. I’m hoping the practical-experience part of the program will help guide me towards answering that question. But I do know that I want to stay in the Vancouver area. How can anyone turn down this beautiful city?!
Best piece of advice: Display confidence, passion, and willingness to learn in everything that you do. In my experience, this has proven to be a successful formula throughout every work, volunteer, and academic challenge.
Last vacation destination: Japan – The natural hot-spring spas are to die for… and lots of sushi!
