Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Year in program: 2nd year
Hometown: Maple Ridge, BC

What inspired you to pursue your program?
I’m a mature student and spent a number of years travelling, teaching English, and working as an administrator before I decided to study again. I was first introduced to Occupational Therapy through career counselling – as I researched the field, I felt it would make a good fit for my skills and interests, and I knew there would be ample job opportunities. Now, at the end of my first year of study, I’ve discovered a passion for OT that I hadn’t anticipated. I feel very fortunate to train in a field that seems to fit so well with my values and to work with people with so much empathy and compassion.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?
I genuinely love being in the classroom with my fellow students and faculty, but I also love being on placement and working with OTs, allied health professionals, and especially the clients/patients. I’m looking forward to it all!

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I had never even heard about Occupational Therapy before career counselling and I’m still learning what it’s all about. In choosing the profession, I made a very practical choice – on paper it was a good match. In reality, it feels like the perfect match.

Best piece of advice:
Focus on your learning, not your grades; stressing about perfection will only distract you from the experience. Do the work and enjoy the ride and you’ll do well.

What superpower do you wish you had?
Maybe teleportation, so I could travel anywhere in the world instantly.

Where in the world would you like to get lost?
I love Colombia and I’m keen to explore its Pacific coast.
