Vice-Dean, Health Engagement

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Vice-Dean, Health Engagement. This is a 0.6 FTE (part-time) position for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to UBC who currently holds a faculty appointment at UBC or is eligible to hold a partner or clinical faculty position in an appropriate academic unit. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2024, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

The UBC Faculty of Medicine is committed to fostering excellence in education, research, and service that contributes to the health of individuals and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including British Columbia’s health authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $350 million in research funding each year.

Reporting to the Dean of Medicine, the Vice-Dean, Health Engagement will work closely with other members of the Dean’s Executive team as well as academic leaders across the Faculty, University and partner institutions to ensure that the Faculty is academically and operationally effective in the delivery of its mission. The incumbent will participate in a wide range of activities, including acting as a key liaison with provincial health authorities, government, and other health sector partners to facilitate integration of clinical and academic activities as well as address issues and barriers while identifying and building upon opportunities. The Vice-Dean, Health Engagement will also provide Faculty leadership in matters of Indigenous engagement and reconciliation, including implementation and evaluation of the Faculty’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action. The incumbent will foster and support the development of international engagement and global health activities within the Faculty, as well as to ensure that faculty members engaged in clinical activity within the province are appropriately supported and valued.

The Vice-Dean, Health Engagement will provide leadership by creating and advancing the Faculty’s mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the University. The incumbent will foster and maintain an environment that promotes the Faculty’s values of excellence, mutual respect, caring, and integrity where civility, diversity, opportunity, and inclusion are valued and central to all encounters across the Faculty, the University, and the communities.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in senior leadership roles within a clinical or academic setting and have demonstrated success in supporting the career development and mentorship of diverse faculty members. The successful candidate will have administrative experience with an understanding of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate medical education, health professional programs, research, academic medicine and clinical care. The successful candidate will also have experience in strategic planning and implementation, as well as demonstrated ability to build effective and collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders. The candidate will have experience in negotiation, conflict engagement and management, change management, team building, fostering engagement, and promoting inclusivity across the working and learning environments. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
