Director, Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR)

The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) at The University of British Columbia (UBC), and the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) invite applications for the position of Director, Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR). The appointment is for an initial term of five (5) years with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to UBC who currently holds a faculty appointment at UBC or is eligible to hold an adjunct, partner or clinical faculty position in an appropriate academic unit.

The CHSPR is an independent Senate approved Research Centre of the FoM, UBC, based in SPPH, UBC. Their mission is to stimulate scientific enquiry into health system performance, equity, and sustainability. As leaders of independent, policy relevant research and graduate training, they are dedicated to fostering visionary research within a collaborative and innovative research environment. Their work engages and informs health policy and issues that matter to Canadians. CHSPR builds knowledge that improves health services in Canada. Their work stimulates scientific enquiry into population health and into ways in which health services can best be organized, funded and delivered. The researchers and staff carry out a diverse program of research and development, delivering the tools and analyses needed to renew health care and improve the health of Canadians. They train health policy leaders of tomorrow in a collaborative research environment. Their training programs are uniquely multidisciplinary with a focus on creative development and use of evidence to inform decision making. CHSPR is committed to translating research into action. They conduct research that is relevant to today’s health policy concerns and work with decision makers to support informed decisions that improve health care in British Columbia, Canada, and abroad.  

Reporting jointly to the Vice-Dean, Research, FoM and the Director, School of Population and Public Health, FoM, the Director, CHSPR is responsible for implementing the research strategy, including leading the research priorities of the CHSPR and encouraging interdisciplinary research, supporting the research of investigators and research scientists in the Centre, developing and maintaining partnerships to ensure faculty/research scientists are supported by the organization and host institutions to effectively conduct their scholarly activities. The Director will actively pursue opportunities for fund raising and will also put into place mechanisms within the CHSPR to directly raise funds for the CHSPR, in keeping with the policies and regulations of the University and the FoM. The Director oversees the activities of CHSPR, including grants, research contracts, and compliance with UBC research policies. The incumbent will be a member of relevant research committees of the UBC FoM.

Candidates should hold a PhD, MD or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a minimum of five years’ experience as an independent investigator including experience in the development, delivery, and implementation of collaborative research programs. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of significant research achievement, commitment to multi-institute collaborations and ability to value the diversity of contributions from partners. Candidates should possess collaborative leadership skills, administrative experience, and ability to work effectively with learners, trainees, faculty and administrative leadership.
