Dr. Michael Brauer, Professor at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health, is the first recipient of the Bastable-Potts Asthma Research Prize, given by the Asthma Society of Canada (ASC).

Dr. Brauer’s ground-breaking research into traffic-related air pollution and its relationship to asthma in both adults and children is being recognized by the ASC as a significant contribution to Canadians suffering from allergies and asthma.

The Bastable-Potts Asthma Research Fund was established in 2014, following the receipt of a bequest from the estate of Gail Suzanne Potts, who died in 2012. Mrs. Potts’ mother suffered from adult onset asthma, and her desire was to foster research and the climate for research into the variety of factors that are known to be or could be responsible for adult onset asthma. The award recognizes innovative research done by a Canadian researcher that adds to the body of knowledge regarding asthma and its relationship to environmental exposures.

Dr. Brauer is also one of the recipients of the ASC’s inaugural For Life and Breath Innovation Awards, which celebrate the contributions of three key individuals whose work has dramatically helped improve the lives of Canadians with asthma and respiratory allergies. These contributions have been made in the realm of public and population health research, industrial design and public policy.

These awards are being presented at the ASC’s For Life and Breath Conference in Toronto on April 30, 2014.
