Hometown: Jinan, China
Program: Occupational and Environmental Hygiene
What attracted you to your field?

Prior to joining the Occupational Environmental Health program, I worked in a biotech company where I learned the importance of addressing and controlling health hazards in the workplace. I wish to apply the concepts and principles that I’ve learned in the program to benefit society by keeping workers safe in their daily lives.

What is your favourite moment from your time at UBC?

I have always enjoyed interacting with others in my academic and professional careers. During my time at UBC, I have made some lifelong friends. When the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in early 2020, it was a challenging time for everyone. But I was able to continue interacting with friends and faculty from school virtually. Throughout the turbulent year, it was inspiring to see everyone maintaining contact, working together, and celebrating victories remotely.

What is one piece of advice you have for students entering your program?

Be authentic. The program welcomes people from a variety of backgrounds. It is through this difference that we grow together and bring new perspectives to the profession. The faculty is very supportive of everyone’s differences. It is about adding to your skillset rather than changing who you are.

What is one small pleasure that brings you joy?

During the pandemic period I have rediscovered cooking as a way to calm my mind and bring joy to my family.

What’s next for you?

Throughout the past two years in the OEH program, I was instilled with a passion for health research. In September, I will begin the next stage of my career by pursuing a PhD in Population and Public Health at UBC to further my knowledge and skills in the field of health research. I wish to contribute to facilitating the implementation of evidence-based policies and mitigating health risks.
