What inspired you to pursue your program?
I was looking for a program that wholeheartedly supported learner autonomy and independence in residency and created an environment like the rural family practice setting I hope to work in. The opportunity to practice full scope while living in a small, tight-knit rural community was especially appealing. Above all, the honesty and character of the site directors and program preceptors really sold me.
Why did you choose UBC?
There is always a draw to returning to your home province, and growing up on Vancouver Island, it was a great opportunity to get back to B.C. while also training in a highly reputable postgraduate program. UBC itself is quite broad nowadays, with offshoots/collaborative educational institutions across the province, making training in historically rural/remote regions much more feasible.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
As a second-year resident doctor in rural family medicine, I feel like this year is all about finding my own style and becoming more comfortable with flying solo. As it is my final year of residency, I’m also very excited to explore other rural communities and the abundance of practice opportunities available to see where I might fit best.
