Sara Kharsa

Program: Psychiatry – Interior
Year in Program: 3

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I find fulfillment in understanding my patients’ experiences and building meaningful connections with them. I’m fascinated by the connection between mind and body and feel humbled to be part of patients’ journeys as they learn about themselves and work toward improving their function and quality of life. Psychiatry allows me to support patients through challenging times and explore different ways to reduce their suffering.

I also value that psychiatry encourages lifelong curiosity and self-improvement, allowing me to grow while working alongside patients in a way that feels deeply human and aligned with my values.

Why did you choose UBC?

I chose UBC for its collegial environment. I felt welcomed and supported by staff and co-residents, which created a safe space for my learning. UBC Psychiatry also prioritizes wellness and work-life balance, which I believe are crucial for sustainable progress.

I feel fortunate to live in B.C., and being a UBC resident doctor has helped me thrive both professionally and personally. Most importantly, I’ve felt a sense of belonging throughout residency.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I’m looking forward to meeting new preceptors and learning from their expertise while continuing to develop as a clinician. I want to learn more about geriatric psychiatry and feel more confident in making a difference for this vulnerable population. I’m also excited to gain more clinical experience in treating conditions like severe depression, including using modalities such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and continuing my psychodynamic therapy supervision to build on my psychotherapy skills. Outside of work, I’m eager to spend more time with my co-residents, as they make residency even more enjoyable.
