Justin A. Wong

By Alex Tsui | August 1, 2025

Hometown: Burnaby, B.C.
Program: Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
Year in Program: 4

What inspired you to pursue your program?

The reason I wanted to pursue Medical Laboratory Science was because the program offers a breadth of unique courses that are not typically offered at the undergraduate level. These courses include but are not limited to Histochemistry, Histology, Human Pathology, Microscopy and Medical Laboratory Safety. The opportunity to study a wide selection of topics has been an unmatched experience, and I strongly recommend this program to those who desire to broaden their theoretical and practical understanding of laboratory science.

Why did you choose UBC?

My family had moved to Burnaby and I wanted to stay close to them by attending an institution nearby. Among universities in the Greater Vancouver area, I picked UBC for its student life: there is a wide selection of student clubs, flexible student mental health support, the culture-enriching experiences of museums and art galleries and the vibrant gardens and nature.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

The program is challenging, yet rewarding. After resting well during the summer, I am excited for the opportunity to reset and start the school year rejuvenated. I am continuously learning to enjoy my studies and not just view my studies as a means to an end. This coming year is my final year of my undergraduate degree, and I am looking forward to a healthy study-life balance.
