Program: Family Medicine Residency in Abbotsford-Mission

What attracted you to your field?

I knew from the middle of medical school that I wanted to go into family medicine. The career versatility and continuity with patients were the most attractive factors. I have particularly loved rural family medicine for the same reasons and hope to pursue this for at least the next five years of my career. Currently, I am enjoying reading up on Sports Medicine topics and I may pursue a Sports Med certification in the future, but I can easily see this changing in 5-10 years time while I find another medical area of interest to add to my practice as well.

In 10 years, what UBC moment will you still be talking about?

All of my post-secondary education was done at UBC so I can attribute most of my stories to this university. My favourite stories come from my rural rotations and usually relate to outdoor activities or clinical encounters. I will definitely still be talking about my amazing cohort of residents and faculty in the Abbotsford program who helped me during my residency.

What’s next for you?

This summer will be pretty exciting. I’m getting married in July and we also just bought a puppy. My fiancee is a medical student at Western, so in August our honeymoon will be a road trip across Canada. I plan on locuming in Ontario, likely in the communities surrounding London. I want to maintain my acute care skills by working in smaller community ERs and eventually start doing some rural locums in Northern Ontario and back in B.C. In two years if all goes as planned, we hope to be back in B.C. for good.

As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?

I find that my greatest source of inspiration often comes from my patients. In family medicine we have this amazing window into the life and culture of our communities. You meet some people who are so involved and devoted to their community that it almost couldn’t function without them. I also love seeing elderly people who are still hiking and mountain biking every day and loving life.

Name one thing on your bucket list.

I want to know B.C. like the back of my hand. I am slowly checking off communities in this beautiful province that I have spent a significant amount of time in and eventually I want to say that I have been to all corners of the province. The next few areas on my list are Haida Gwaii and the Peace River district.
