Program: MSc. in Genetic Counselling
Class of 2018

Hometown: Alden, Iowa, USA

Jill.Madden_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Science was always my favorite subject growing up and, ultimately, this same passion for science drove me to earn my PhD in Genetics. After years spent primarily in research labs, I craved patient interaction and found genetic counseling to be the perfect fit.

What excites you about the upcoming year?
I’m thrilled to get into the clinic and help people! I also can’t wait to meet new people, see what Canada is all about, and explore all that Vancouver has to offer!

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
One surprising thing about me is that I grew up on a farm in rural Iowa. We raised pigs and cattle and grew corn and soybeans. I spent my childhood appreciating the wonders of science first-hand by cross-breeding animals and seeing the introduction of transgenic crops. I also spent my summers showing cattle and pigs competitively at the local and state fairs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be working in a clinic as a genetic counselor and traveling around the world in my free time.

Best piece of advice: Pursue your dreams! Many think that it was a difficult decision for me to return to school, but it wasn’t. Once I saw how genetic counselors are able to help patients and their families, I was determined to make that my career.

Last vacation destination: Anywhere and everywhere! I love to travel! Towards the top of my current list are Alaska, Germany, Japan, Ecuador and Peru. I also can’t wait to explore Western Canada!
