Meet our Students

Hometown: Sidney, BC
Program: Master of Occupational Therapy
Year in Program: 2

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I heard about occupational therapy (OT) from an instructor at Camosun College back in 2013. When I researched what OT was all about, I couldn’t ignore how perfectly it matched with my own interests, values and passion. I’ve always loved using my skills and knowledge to serve others and help them to improve their lives. Overall, it’s the perfect fit for me and I’m grateful everyday to be part of such a kind, compassionate and inspiring community of both learners and teachers.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?

I genuinely love the experiences, growth and learning that happen both inside and outside of the classroom. So, I guess I’m most looking forward to all the new things I’ll learn from clients, professors and my peers. I’m a very curious person and I love to seek out different opportunities as often as I can.

Best piece of advice

My best piece of advice would be that an attitude of gratitude goes a long way towards creating a happy and full life. There will always be people with more and people with less, so if we are grateful to be exactly where we are in life, then there’s a sense of calmness knowing that everything is as it’s meant to be!

My second piece of advice would be to slow down and enjoy the moments whether you are at your ‘destination’ or not. What’s the rush? There’s 24 hours in a day regardless of how much you try to rush through sections of your life. Make the most of each one.

First job

My first casual job was doing landscaping every summer. I’ve never had a full-time job because I’ve been in school full-time, volunteering, and coaching since I graduated from high school. But I consider being a full-time student a full-time job, although my parents might disagree! I’m looking forward to a full career as an OT soon enough and am enjoying the student life!

What’s next on your BC bucket list?

That’s a tough one, my bucket list is long and extravagant! My next feasible bucket list item is to cycle to Nelson, camping along the way and experiencing our beautiful province! Vancouver Island is starting to call my name so I can see myself buying some property in a more rural community and living close to nature – but does that count as a bucket list item?
