Eugene Wong

By sarah stenabaugh | May 14, 2018

Hometown: Hong Kong/Markham, Ontario
Program: Genetic Counselling

What attracted you to your field?

I was drawn to a career that allowed me to help patients, teach, and pursue research. Being a genetic counsellor was the perfect fit given the multidisciplinary skill set we are equipped with.

In 10 years, what UBC moment will you still be talking about?

The time I went to Sydney, Australia for 8 weeks as part of my summer clinical rotation. I got a chance to work with an internationally well-respected group specializing in inherited heart conditions. It was a great opportunity to experience how genetic counselling is practiced in another country and also to travel and enjoy life in Australia!

What’s next for you?

I will be working as a clinical genetic counsellor at Providence Health Care and seeing patients with inherited heart conditions.

As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?

I am inspired by all the passionate genetic counsellors that are taking on leadership roles via pursuing research to improve genetic counselling practice or patient care. I hope to take on leadership roles once I’ve become well established in my career.

Name one thing on your bucket list.

One day, doing a working holiday in Europe.
