Program: MSc. in Genetic Counselling
Class of 2018

Hometown: Toronto

Eugene.Wong_214X300What attracted you to your field of study or research?
Human genetics and developmental biology were my favourite courses and I also had a passion for conducting relevant research in these fields. However, after spending my senior years in the laboratory, I realized that pursuing laboratory research was not for me as I did not like the working environment. I was also interested in teaching because it would allow me to retain my interest in genetics, while helping students. With my wide scope of interests, genetic counselling was the perfect fit for me as genetic counselors are trained with a diverse skill-set, allowing them to practice different roles.

What excites you about the upcoming year?
Being able to finally play an active part in a genetic counselling session, as opposed to observational roles during my volunteering. I’m also excited about the supplemental educational opportunities (I.E., rounds and seminars, health mentors program) that are offered to enrich my learning experience. Finally, I’m excited to get to know my 5 other classmates and to explore the beautiful city of Vancouver!

What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I love to bake (or at least try)!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself as a clinical genetic counsellor taking on a leadership role through participation in teaching, supervising, and mentoring genetic counselling students. I also hope to continue to take part in research, as genetic counselling is a constantly evolving field.

Best piece of advice: Pick a career you’re truly passionate about and don’t worry about what will happen in the future. With the right amount of hard-work and support from your mentors, friends, and family, you’ll eventually succeed.

Last vacation destination: A 2 week excursion throughout Asia, which involved relaxing on the white sandy beaches off the coast of Thailand, a food trip in Singapore, and visiting friends and relatives in my birthplace, Hong Kong!
