Hometown: Nelson, B.C.
Program: Midwifery – Fraser
Year in Program: 4
What inspired you to pursue your program?
I consider midwifery to be unique in our modern healthcare system. I was drawn to the career as it is a beautiful blend of modern scientific knowledge but also a more ancient intuitive art. I wanted to learn how to provide a sense of safety and wellbeing to pregnant people and their families that extends beyond purely physical health. I also recognized that I would be positioned in a unique time in someone’s life and could have a major impact to the longitudinal health of both them and their babies going forward.
Why did you choose UBC?
Like many, I knew I would one day want to practice in B.C. and UBC is the only university in the province to offer this program. There are currently more than 500 registered midwives in B.C., and although the profession is growing and expanding, this is still an intimate group. What better way to learn, work and grow with my future colleagues and mentors while also learning about our healthcare system.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Academically, I’m most looking forward to the opportunity to consolidate my clinical skills and knowledge in a community close to my hometown in the West Kootenays. I also look forward to attending the Canadian Association of Midwives conference in Calgary for the first time this November. And of course, to graduate!
