Program: Emergency Medicine Enhanced Skills, Kamloops
Year in Program: 3

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I knew relatively early on that I wanted to pursue further training in emergency medicine. The decision to choose Kamloops was clinched after I spent a two-week rotation at Royal Inland Hospital during my family medicine residency. A few things that stood out included the high volume of diverse and complex patient cases and the attending physicians’ enthusiasm and commitment to teaching. The experience provided me with excellent clinical training opportunities in emergency medicine, trauma care and how to lead codes/trauma activations in the emergency room. I also appreciated the cohesion and collegiality among the entire healthcare team – from emergency doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists to specialists and security staff. It also didn’t hurt that the area has a world class mountain biking scene.

Why did you choose UBC?

B.C. is home. I knew from my family medicine residency the value of training where you intend to work. Being familiar with the systems, available resources, referral pathways and local culture and practice patterns all help make it easier to focus on reinforcing the medicine during that crucial transition to independent practice.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

My newly minted schedule that landed in my inbox a few months ago. As I read through each of my upcoming rotations, I could feel myself getting more and more excited. What a profoundly decision-reinforcing experience it was after making the choice to extend my training. I’m over the moon about having the opportunity to continue building my comfort and competency in emergency medicine among a crew of passionate and education-oriented emergency doctors. I look forward to being both supported but also pushed to practice to the highest calibre and to the fullest extent of my scope.
