By Alex Hsuan Tsui | January 16, 2026

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) jury praises “extremely engaging and beautiful” Pathways Magazine

Pathways, the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s print and digital magazine, has earned international recognition with a Gold Award in the AAMC Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Awards for Excellence competition — claiming top prize in the Single or Special Issue Publications category.

The award-winning issue of Pathways — which focuses on brain health across the lifespan —was described by judges as an “extremely engaging and beautiful issue” and praised for its “diverse and compelling” photography. Combining arresting visuals, engaging stories and interactive multimedia content, Pathways brings the Faculty of Medicine’s world-leading research, education and training to vivid life, demystifying complex brain science by explaining the real-world impacts of research and innovation at UBC on the patient experience.

“Being recognized with this award, in a competition that includes some of the world’s most eminent medical schools, reflects UBC’s global leadership in institutional excellence,” said Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC.

“The creativity and dedication of the Creative and Communications team is truly impressive — showcasing the culture of innovation that fuels this Faculty while enhancing our reputation and visibility on the global stage.”

The annual, peer-reviewed awards honour the most creative and effective approaches used to promote academic medicine through alumni relations, communications, community relations, development, and marketing programs and projects. Winners are chosen for overall quality, innovation, comprehensive strategy, goal achievement, use of resources, and institutional or community impact.

Katie White, Executive Director of the Office of Creative and Communications, added: “We’re proud to receive this award from the AAMC. It’s a recognition of the talent and creativity of our editorial team. We thank the extraordinary scientists, educators, learners and staff for trusting us to tell their stories with care. It’s a privilege to bring them to the world.”

This is the tenth award for the C&C team in the past four years, and its second AAMC GIA award. A full list of the AAMC GIA winners and information about the winning entries are available on the AAMC website.
