Doctors are dedicated to taking care of others, but in the fast-paced, challenging environment of the hospital, doctors, especially those in training, may sometimes neglect their own wellness needs.
The Resident Wellness Office, a new initiative from the UBC Postgraduate Medical Education office, aims to improve that by offering a safe space, and a wellspring of resources devoted to helping residents and their families manage the unique stresses of medical education and practice.
“We are committed to offering solutions to help residents become proactive in taking care of their mental, emotional, and physical well-being,” said Counsellor Rebecca Turnbull. “Whether it is one-on-one counseling, group counseling, workshops, or assessment for a referral into the community, our goal is to ensure our residents feel supported.”
Residents, program directors, faculty and staff gathered at Vancouver General Hospital Feb. 26 to celebrate the official opening of the innovative service.
“Our belief is that all residents should have access to support services to help them reach their potential and navigate through this critical and demanding point in their careers,” said Roger Wong, Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education, who was there welcoming guests.
Counselling sessions can take place in person at the Wellness Office (on the third floor of the Jim Pattison Pavilion at VGH) or over the phone, and may be provided to residents and their partners or families.
