Dr. Roger Wong, Executive Associate Dean, Education and Clinical Professor, Division of Geriatric Medicine, is being recognized by the Canadian Geriatrics Society for his exceptional national leadership in the field of seniors’ health care. The Ronald Cape Distinguished Service Award – presented to Dr. Wong at the Canadian Geriatric Society Annual Meeting in Halifax on Friday, May 3 – is the highest honour bestowed by the Society.

“It’s a tremendous honour to raise public awareness of and support for seniors’ health and care across Canada through my work.” says Dr. Wong.

“In particular, I’m honoured to be contributing to the ongoing transformation of how we care for seniors with acute and chronic health conditions, while also having the opportunity to train and mentor the next generation of doctors who are delivering this care.”

Dr. Wong’s work on Acute Care for Elders (A.C.E.) units has been replicated at hospitals across Canada and around the world, positively impacting how care is delivered for seriously ill seniors at their most vulnerable. He is also an advocate for seniors’ health and wellness, engaging in extensive community outreach and public education in partnership with organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C.

Dr. Wong is the first UBC professor to receive the Ronald Cape Distinguished Service Award in the past two decades, and the second British Columbian to receive it in the history of the award.
