Biography
As Vice Dean, Research, Dr. Wasserman oversees and supports research efforts across the Faculty, fostering province-spanning collaborations to advance visionary research and expand opportunities for research trainees. He provides guidance to health research program leaders and ensures resources are supported effectively across the Faculty on all campuses and health authorities. Dr. Wasserman is also building the Faculty’s biomedical data science and artificial intelligence capacity to support health research and improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Wasserman is a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics. He is a principal investigator at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, where he formerly served as Associate Dean, Research, and a senior scientist in the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, where he previously served as Director.
An internationally recognized computational biologist, Dr. Wasserman’s research focuses on developing software and AI-based approaches to investigate the basis of genetic diseases. He co-leads the Silent Genomes Project, advancing equitable access to genomic technologies for Indigenous populations in B.C. A Killam laureate and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has authored more than 200 publications and is the co-inventor on 16 patents.
