VFMP Communication / Clinical Skills Director

The Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for an administrative appointment as the VFMP Communication / Clinical Skills Director. This is a 0.20 FTE (1 day per week) position for a three (3) year term, with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review, and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the Faculty. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2021, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

The Faculty of Medicine plays a critical role in training the health professionals of the future. Students in the MD Undergraduate Program have the opportunity to learn medicine at one of four geographically distinct program sites – the Island Medical Program (IMP), Northern Medical Program (NMP), Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) and the Southern Medical Program (SMP) – where they gain invaluable training and mentoring from highly skilled clinicians.

Reporting to the Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Fraser, and working collaboratively with VFMP and provincial colleagues, the successful candidate will be responsible for course planning and delivery, course improvement, faculty recruitment, and student assessment for the Communication / Clinical Skills component of the Foundations of Medicine course (MEDD 411) in Year 1, which is delivered during Term 1.

The successful candidate will be a clinical with an MD or equivalent. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) curriculum, preferably with experience in teaching in UGME; a collaborative leadership style; excellent interpersonal skills; experience working within large, complex teams and organizational structures; administrative experience and excellent organizational skills; and interest in pursing innovative ways of teaching communication skills.
