Provincial Program Director, Family Practice Residency Program, Department of Family Practice

The Department of Family Practice in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Provincial Program Director for the Family Practice Residency Program. This is a three-year term appointment with a time commitment of 0.80 FTE, equivalent to 4.0 days per week, and is renewable subject to satisfactory review. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of this role.

The Department of Family Practice advances patient‑centered care across British Columbia by educating and supporting medical students, residents, physicians, and midwives, fostering innovative approaches to primary health care, and promoting strong partnerships within families and communities. Through leadership in teaching and research, the department works to strengthen family medicine and midwifery and ultimately improve the health and well‑being of people throughout the province.

The Provincial Program Director for Family Practice will be responsible for the oversight of the 23 Family Medicine training sites across the Province of British Columbia and the delivery of the Family Medicine training program to the 300+ Family Medicine trainees currently at UBC. The Director takes the lead in supporting ongoing rich and diverse clinical & educational experiences that meet the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) standards and objectives of training, and ensures they also align with the provincial and institutional priorities and strategies for the UBC Postgraduate office and the strategic educational pillars within the Faculty of Medicine.

Given the significant size and complexity of the Family Medicine program at UBC in the context of the Provincial societal need for increasing numbers of Family Physicians, as well as expansion of Family Medicine training spots both in BC and across the country,  there is  an opportunity to re-imagine the  current structure with the new incoming Program Director to ensure sustainability and optimization of the Program long into the future.

This position reports to the Head, Department of Family Practice and Associate Dean, Postgraduate in the Faculty of Medicine. The incumbent will also work closely with the Regional Associate Deans, as well as the Postgraduate Assistant and Associate Deans and other Postgraduate Faculty leads.

The successful candidate will hold an MD and maintain certification and membership with the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) and be licensed, or be eligible to be licensed, with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons. They must hold, or be eligible to hold, a faculty appointment at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy and understanding
  • Ability to respect and work with a diversity of perspectives and behaviours
  • Ability to create and foster an environment that promotes inclusivity and the values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity
  • Experience with the competencies and educational experiences required by the standards of the specialty as per the CFPC
  • Experience assessing the quality of the educational experience and review resources available to ensure maximal benefit derived from integration of the components of the program
