Head, Department of Orthopaedics

The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Head, Department of Orthopaedics. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in academic leadership as well as have experience in sustaining and strengthening collaborations with other academic units. The successful applicant is also expected to establish strong clinical and administrative linkages with all six Health Authorities at a provincial, regional and community level across British Columbia. This appointment is for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time UBC appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including B.C.’s Health Authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Department Head will provide leadership by creating and advancing a provincial departmental mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the Faculty and the University. They will promote the Faculty’s principles of excellence, engagement, equity and effectiveness and will facilitate collaboration across the Faculty and University.

The Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mandate is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health at the community, provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of engineering research, and is comprised of 180+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to increase knowledge in the areas of clinical Orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in such areas as minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques and improved biomaterials and implants.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in working with the leadership of Health Authority partners to create academic integration of teaching and research into clinical service delivery and Health Human Resource Planning, particularly in areas of academic expertise. The successful applicant will show evidence of building, managing and maintaining high-quality and productive relationships across cultural differences, and having the ability to communicate and interact with empathy, understanding, and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.

The successful candidate will have appropriate knowledge and clinical experience in Orthopaedics and be a proven leader with administrative experience working in a dynamic and complex healthcare environment. The individual will have demonstrated success in supporting career development of faculty members, demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and a proven record of scholarly excellence at an international level. The successful applicant should hold an MD, and be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, and be eligible for certification in orthopaedic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
