The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Faculty Lead, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (AREDI) in the Office of Faculty Development. This is a 0.10 FTE (0.5 days per week) position for a three (3) year term.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Strategic Plan, Building the Future: 2021 – 2026, commits to providing faculty support on practical ways to create culturally-safe, inclusive, and respectful teaching and learning environments. The Faculty Lead, AREDI position is responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation and renewal of strategic faculty development projects targeted towards faculty teaching in the undergraduate, postgraduate and health professions programs to cultivate a culture of safety, inclusion, and respect.
The Faculty Lead, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AREDI), Faculty Development position reports to the Associate Dean, Faculty Development. Works closely with the Associate Director and other staff in the Office of Faculty Development as needed, including the Program Manager and the Instructional Designers. Collaborates and consults with educational leaders and faculty in UGME, PGME and the Health Professions in order to identify and respond to needs.
The Faculty Lead, AREDI, Faculty Development position will be responsible for Strategic Leadership by providing leadership on how to support faculty in their role as teachers on anti-oppression, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and accessibility topics through programs, resources, and collaborating with other units on effective practices and approaches to addressing similar challenges.; advise, on an as-needed basis, various Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Health Professions groups and committees to influence the development of policies and procedures to improve the learning environment; Work in close partnership and collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine Office of Respectful Environments, Equity Diversity, and Inclusion, and other AREDI leads as needed to ensure alignment in content.
The Faculty Lead, AREDI, Faculty Development position will also be responsible for Educational support by collaboration with the Associate Dean and Associate Director, Faculty Development and other faculty development team members to help develop and deliver educational programming across a variety of platforms to support the Faculty’s Strategic Plan objectives and promote systems and behaviour change across the Faculty; providing direction and content from an AREDI lens for faculty development projects and educational artefacts including, but not limited to, workshops, educational resources (e.g. modules, guides, etc), webinars and other supports for faculty.
The successful candidate will hold a degree in medical or adult education, or substantial experience in same fields. The ideal candidate should have broad understanding of the experiences and barriers faced by historically and systemically marginalized groups and evidence-based practices on mitigating these barriers; Ability to engage comfortably in discussions on anti-racism and discrimination, equity, diversity and inclusion using current discourse; Understanding of the historical and contemporary impacts of discrimination in post-secondary education and the Canadian medical system; Work effectively and productively with people with diverse perspectives; Skilled at understanding and creating learning environments that meet the needs of both dominant groups and historically marginalized groups and effectively promote growth of both groups towards cultural change. Recognizes and addresses personal and institutional assumptions and behaviours that create barriers to inclusion; Experience and/or commitment to working collaboratively with Indigenous support units at UBC and the Faculty of Medicine. Actively seeks to understand the climate of reconciliation in Canada and at UBC, and its relationship with UBC’s commitment to equity; Collaborative leadership, interpersonal skills and conflict-management skills, ability to effectively communicate, navigate difficult conversations, build relationships, interact and collaborate with compassion, respect and understanding with all members within the Faculty of Medicine, and at UBC; Administrative experience; excellent organizational and time management skills; competent with technology and comfortable learning new technologies; Commitment to continual learning as the EDI discourse is constantly evolving.
