Director of Research, BC Centre on Substance Use

The Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC), Providence Health Care Research Institute (PHCRI) and the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) invite applications for the position of Director of Research, BC Centre on Substance Use (http://www.bccsu.ca). This appointment is for an initial term of (5) years with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the University, at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Clinical faculty members are also encouraged to apply. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021 or a date to be mutually agreed upon.

The BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is a provincially networked organization with a mandate to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based approaches to substance use and addiction. As a research centre of PHCRI, VCHRI, and FoM, BCCSU’s vision is to transform substance use policies and care in BC by translating research into education and evidence-based care guidance. By supporting the collaborative development of evidence-based policies, guidelines and standards, BCCSU seeks to improve the integration of best practices and care across the continuum of substance use, thereby serving all British Columbians.

Reporting directly to the Vice Dean, Research, UBC FoM, as well as to the FoM Associate Dean, Research, PHCRI for research related to the PHC campus and FoM Associate Dean, Research, VCHRI for research related to the VCH campus, the Director of Research of BCCSU assumes overall responsibility for the strategic direction and operation on all research conducted at the Centre. The Director of Research will seek out and identify opportunities for funding the BCCSU research program and coordinate applications to granting agencies and industry, and be responsible for fostering and maintaining the interactive, interdisciplinary nature of the BCCSU research program.

The successful candidate will hold a MD and/or PhD, or an equivalent level of training with a documented ability to obtain research funding and display exceptional organizational and administrative skills. Demonstrated scientific leadership, outstanding educational contributions, a strong research track record, demonstrated experience in mentoring and training junior investigators and the ability to maintain effective working relationships in an interdisciplinary environment are essential.
