Director, Northern Centre for Clinical Research

The University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (FoM), the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and Northern Health (NH) invite applications for the position of Director, Northern Centre for Clinical Research (NCCR). The appointment is for an initial term of three (3) years with the possibility of renewal for 5 years, subject to satisfactory review. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to UBC, UNBC, or NH who currently holds a faculty appointment at UBC or UNBC or is eligible to hold an adjunct, partner or clinical faculty position. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2022, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The Northern Centre for Clinical Research (NCCR) is being developed as a joint Centre of the UBC Faculty of Medicine (FoM), the University of Northern BC (UNBC) and Northern Health (NH) built on a collaborative partnership. The mission of the NCCR is to enhance the capacity and cohesion of the clinical and biomedical life sciences research programs in Northern British Columbia, creating strategic opportunities to share resources among UBC, NH and UNBC, in collaboration with local partners. Located in Prince George, but serving researchers across Northern BC, the Centre will focus on medical life sciences and clinical research and innovation, including clinical trials and virtual healthcare interventions, in the northern, remote, rural and Indigenous geographical, social and cultural contexts. It will increase accessibility to, and participation in research opportunities for the people of Northern BC.

The NCCR will provide infrastructure support and serve as a space for research excellence, knowledge exchange and translation for clinical and medical life sciences research. It will provide a venue for collaboration among health researchers and practitioners in Northern BC who are interested in medical life sciences, clinical research and medical education research in the clinical context. It will also provide research training and mentoring opportunities for health professionals and learners.

The Director, NCCR, is responsible for implementing the research strategy, supporting the research of investigators and research scientists in the Centre, developing and maintaining partnerships to ensure faculty/research scientists are supported by the organization and host institutions to effectively conduct their scholarly activities. Working closely with the NH Regional Director, Research Evaluation and Analytics, the Director oversees the activities of the Northern Centre for Clinical Research (NCCR) including grants, research contracts, and compliance with UBC, UNBC and Northern Health research policies. The incumbent is a member of the NCCR Steering Committee and the NH Clinical Research Operations Committee as well as relevant research committees of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and UNBC.

The NCCR Director reports jointly to the Vice-Dean Research, Faculty of Medicine UBC, Vice President Research, UNBC and the Vice President, Quality and Planning NH which form the Governance Committee that oversees all NCCR activities. Functional direction will be provided by the Vice President, Planning and Quality NH.

Candidates should be health professionals (e.g., MD, Nursing, PT) with a PhD (preferred) or equivalent and a minimum of five years’ experience in a clinical research environment as an independent investigator including experience in the development and delivery of collaborative research programs. Experience overseeing clinical trials is preferred.  Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of significant research achievement, commitment to multi-institute collaborations and ability to value the diversity of contributions from partners. Candidates should possess collaborative leadership skills and ability to work effectively with learners, trainees, faculty and administrative leadership.
