Associate Director, MD/PhD Program

The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of Associate Director, MD/PhD Program. This is an approximately 0.1 FTE position (one half day per week) for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review, and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the Faculty. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

The University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies jointly offer a seven-year MD/PhD program designed for students who want to pursue a career as clinician-scientists.  This program provides highly-qualified students with the opportunity to combine their medical school experience with intensive scientific training.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist the Program Director with program leadership, MD/PhD student admissions, and management of the MD/PhD program. Additional expectations may include program promotion at UBC and affiliated sites, liaison with external organizations, attending university and national education meetings, student progress meetings and seminar organization. Administrative work is supported by a dedicated Program Assistant. The Associate Director, MD/PhD Program reports to the Director, MD/PhD Program.

The successful candidate will hold an MD and/or PhD and have: knowledge of the University of British Columbia MD/PhD program; demonstrated experience in PhD supervision; a good grasp of undergraduate medical studies, graduate education and translational research; excellent administrative experience and organizational skills; demonstrated collaborative leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff. Ideal candidates will also have an active record of success in medical research as a clinician-scientist, and a background and position different from (but complementary to) current program leadership.
