The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of Vice-Dean, Academic. This is a 0.6 FTE (part-time) position for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review, and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the University who is currently in a tenure stream faculty appointment at the rank of Professor. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2023, or upon a date to be mutually agreed.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including B.C.’s Health Authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $350 million in research funding each year. The Vice-Dean, Academic will provide leadership by creating and advancing the Faculty’s mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the University. The incumbent will create an environment that promotes the Faculty’s values of excellence, mutual respect, caring, and integrity where civility, diversity, opportunity, and inclusion are valued and central to all encounters across the Faculty, the University, and the communities.
Reporting to the Dean of Medicine, the Vice-Dean, Academic will work closely with other members of the Dean’s Executive team as well as academic leaders across the Faculty, University and partner institutions to ensure that the Faculty is academically and operationally effective in the delivery of its mission. The incumbent will participate a wide range of activities, including selection and retention of senior academic leaders, departmental and school reviews, and appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure review committee in order to ensure discipline-specific and Faculty-wide standards related to promotion and tenure criteria are maintained. In collaboration with the Managing Director, the Vice-Dean, Academic will lead and oversee the implementation of the FoM strategic plan, including evaluation and reporting progress on the strategic objectives and facilitating accountability and visibility to the plan. The Vice-Dean, Academic will chair or participate on a number of Faculty and UBC committees, and participate in other governance activities.
The successful candidate will bring a proven track record in academic and/or administrative leadership roles and have demonstrated success in supporting the career development and mentorship of faculty members. The appointee will have significant administrative experience, gained in a University or clinical setting, organizational and time management skills, excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative negotiation skills. The successful candidate will show appropriate standards of excellence and high quality in teaching with a commitment to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, will have received recognition in the field of their sustained and productive scholarly activity or educational scholarship, and will have participated significantly in academic and professional affairs. The candidate will also have demonstrated experience in team building, fostering engagement, conflict management and change management, and promoting inclusivity across the working and learning environment.
