Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) Elective Director

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is pleased to invite applications for the position of Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) Elective Director. This is a 0.4 FTE (two days per week) position for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to a satisfactory review. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the Faculty and the anticipated start date is January 1, 2018, or upon a mutually agreed date.

The Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the Provincial Government, is committed to training the health professionals of the future. The VFMP Elective Director will report to the Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Fraser and will provide overall academic leadership for the Year 4 UBC electives in the VFMP and Visiting Student electives provincially. The Director will work collaboratively with the Year 4 Elective Directors at the Island Medical Program (IMP), Northern Medical Program (NMP), and Southern Medical Program (SMP) to plan, develop and deliver electives in Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME). There is frequent formal and informal collegial contact among these faculty members to ensure equity across all sites. The incumbent will serve as a resource for VFMP students on their elective selection and provides direction on various student issues. Specific responsibilities will include reviewing students’ assessments and liaising with the UBC Faculty of Medicine Faculty Development team to promote excellence in clinical teaching, collaborating with the UGME VFMP Clinical Education Co-managers on operational needs recommending policies regarding elective for UBC students and visiting students and liaising with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC on policies related to licensing of visiting students undertaking electives at UBC. The Director will also be responsible for ensuring that electives are of high quality and meet relevant Committee on Accreditation Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) accreditation standards.

Applicants must hold a MD and/or PhD. The successful candidate will be an experienced clinician and/or preceptor who is familiar with Undergraduate Medical Education, and will have experience in, and enthusiasm for, supporting students in their career goals through advising and counselling them about their elective selection.
