The Margolese National Brain & Heart Disorders Prizes
Deadline: Tuesday, November 15, 2011, Midnight, PST.
The Margolese National Brain and Heart Disorders Prizes were created by an estate gift made to the University of British Columbia by Leonard Hubert Margolese.
OVERVIEW
Purpose of the Prizes:
The Margolese National Brain and Heart Disorders Prizes establishes two prizes, one each for Brain Disorders and Heart Disorders. The Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of brain disorders. The Margolese National Heart Disorders Prize will be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of heart disorders. The Prizes are awarded with the expectation that the Prize recipients will continue to demonstrate excellence in their field of work.
Monetary Award for each Prize:
Two prizes of $50,000 payable in Canadian dollars will be awarded annually, one in each of the two categories. The value of the Prizes will be reevaluated every third year.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be considered for a Prize, candidates must be nominated by an expert in their field. Self nominations will not be accepted. The Advisory Selection Committee reserves the right to rule on the eligibility of nominees. Each Prize will be awarded to a person employed by the University of British Columbia (UBC) once out of every six years. In 2011, a UBC employee was awarded the Brain Disorders Prize; therefore UBC employees cannot receive this Prize until 2017. The Heart Disorders Prize is still available to UBC employees. The University may decline to award a Prize in any given year if the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine is of the opinion that awarding a Prize is impractical or undesirable.
