Our goal as a department is optimum health for the women of British Columbia and their offspring, through collaborative health promotion, healthcare, education and research. We believe that these are all interdependent and we strive to strengthen these links from bench to bedside, to community. Research endeavors cover basic science, clinical science and population health across the spectrum of women’s lifespan including all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth.
Building on pioneer collaborative work in lower genital tract neoplasia, we are international collaborators in efforts to improve the care of women so affected and towards disease prevention. We also have international recognition for expertise in the biology and treatment of ovarian tumors and have established OVCARE a collaborative enterprise to further research and treatment in this area.
Reproductive biology unites basic scientists and clinical investigators exploring endocrinology, implantation, infertility, pregnancy loss and assisted reproduction.
Numerous fetal and pregnancy disorders are the subject of inquiry but the VIPER collaborative is a multidisciplinary group focusing on pre-eclampsia and fetal growth disorders. Pre-eclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal death and a major contributor to perinatal and infant mortality.

Infection, and particularly viral infection, in obstetrics and gynaecology is another focus of research. Dr. Deborah Money leads our effort in this collaboration. She is the principal investigator in funded studies on hepatitis C, herpes simplex and varicella and a co-investigator on international and national studies on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) studies and trials. She leads the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, is an active clinician and a highly valued educator, managing to balance these accomplishments in her professional life with the role of a wife and mother with significant community involvement. Her energy and good humour are infectious. She is a wonderful role model for the department.
