Midwifery undergoing resource review
Update as of May 17, 2010:Please be advised that there will be 10 students accepted into the 2010-2011 Midwifery Program. Current applicants will be advised of their status by May 26th. We anticipate interviews will be held between June 9th and June 15th.
The University of British Columbia, with the support of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, is undertaking a review of the Midwifery Program in the Faculty of Medicine.
The Midwifery Program has grown to about 40 students since its inception in 2002, and its graduates have gone on to successful careers across the province. It has become evident, however, that the current resource and delivery model is not adequate to sustain a strong program for the future. For that reason, the University, with the support of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, will review program financing and delivery, among other topics. This type of review is not unique and is often undertaken after newly established programs have been fully operational for several years.
The resulting recommendations of the review and subsequent implementation may preclude admission of new students for the program commencing in fall 2010. Although the University wants to continue the program at its present size, prospective students should be aware that the program may not be able to admit as many students next year. The University and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development all value the program, its instructors and students and are committed to ensuring that it is financially sustainable going forward, so that it continues to meet the growing demand for new midwives in our province.
