Julio Montaner

UBC professor Dr. Julio Montaner came to Canada in 1981 fresh out of medical school. Now he is one of the top AIDS researchers in the world. He helped create a triple drug therapy that is now the standard treatment for HIV and he is president of the International AIDS Society.
Montaner is calling on the Harper government to live up to a 2005 commitment where G8 leaders promised to deliver HIV prevention, treatment and care to all those that need it by 2010.
“A number of years ago our group started to push for more treatment, not just for better outcomes for the patient, but also to curb the growth of the epidemic because a properly treated person does not transmit HIV,” said Montaner.
