Jewellery by Bill Reid donated to UBC

Sydney Friedman, one of the founding members (along with his wife Constance Livingstone-Friedman) of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, has donated a number of early Bill Reid works to UBC’s Museum of Anthropology.
When Reid was still working as an announcer at CBC in 1952, Friedman commissioned a piece from the artist. This began a 20-year friendship between the Friedmans and Reid. During that time, the Friedmans purchased several pieces of gold and silver jewellery from the celebrated Northwest Coast artist.
The donation to MOA includes 11 pieces of jewellery, made between 1954 and ’74. The works have been installed in MOA’s Bill Reid Rotunda.

A version of this story also appeared in the Vancouver Sun and the Province.
