Head, Department of Family Practice

The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of Head, Department of Family Practice. The successful applicant is expected to establish strong clinical and administrative linkages with all six Health Authorities and clinical communities in British Columbia. This appointment is for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time UBC appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including B.C.’s Health Authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $350 million in research funding each year.  The Department Head will provide leadership by creating and advancing a provincial departmental mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the Faculty and the University.  They will promote the Faculty’s principles of excellence, engagement, equity and effectiveness and will facilitate collaboration across the Faculty and University.

The Department of Family Practice is dedicated to improving the health of the people of British Columbia. The Department educates students, physicians, and midwives to be effective providers of patient-centred care in the context of family and community. The Department provides leadership to develop clinical faculty and stimulate and facilitate academic and community-based research and education that address the needs of communities. Its large complement of over 3,000 academic, clinical, and adjunct faculty members provides exceptional opportunities for partnerships and mentoring within and outside the Department. The Department’s faculty members conduct research that span a wide scope from aboriginal peoples’ health to prevention of chronic disease, social epidemiology, genomics in primary care, midwifery and maternal care, health services, systems and policy research.

The successful candidate will bring a proven track record in senior clinical, academic and administrative leadership roles, demonstrated success in supporting the career development of MD and PhD faculty members, demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to undergraduate, graduate and post graduate medical education, and a proven record of scholarly excellence in research at an international level.  The successful candidate should hold an MD and be eligible for registration with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2018 or upon a date to be mutually agreed.
