Fraser Health to fight infection battle at more hospitals

Fraser Health will finish a two-week super clean using a sporacidal bleach at Burnaby Hospital to fight high levels of C. difficile.
Karen Bartlett, a microbiologist and professor at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health, said she thinks it wise not to constantly clean hospitals with a sporacidal bleach.
“It’s because we’re not ever going to achieve sterility and what we want is a normal ecology because a normal ecology can prevent the overgrowth of pathogenic organisms,” she said, adding overuse of sterilization techniques can allow organisms to develop a resistance.
